Does Walgreens Offer Pneumonia Shots

What Is The Difference Between These Two Vaccines

Walgreens Flu Shots available

There are two differences between the two vaccines: how many types of bacteria it protects against and how the vaccine is made.

Prevnar 13 is the brand name for the PCV13 vaccine. The PCV13 is a conjugate vaccine. This means that it contains the sugar part of a bacteria and a protein. The 13 tells you that it protects against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria. You might hear it referred to as the new pneumonia vaccine. Prevnar 13 replaced the Prevnar vaccine, which only protected against seven types of pneumococcal bacteria.

Pneumovax 23 is the brand name for the PPSV23 vaccine. The PPSV23 is a polysaccharide vaccine. A polysaccharide is a sugar molecule that is often found on the surface of bacteria. This vaccine contains only the sugar part of the bacteria. The 23 tells you that it protects against 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria.

Both vaccines help protect against infection of the blood and lining of the brain. The PCV13 vaccine also helps protect against pneumonia.

Other well-known retailers have also become hubs for COVID immunizations. Walmart, for example, began offering vaccinations to healthcare workers in Arkansas and New Mexico before expanding the service to the public in five more states in early February. The superstore plans to continue expansion of the service as supplies become available to do so.

“As we look to a future when supply can meet demand and more people are eligible to receive the vaccine, we plan to offer the vaccine seven days a week at our pharmacies, through planned in-store vaccination clinics, and through large community events,” Walmart Executive Vice President Cheryl Pegus said in a Jan. 22 statement. “At full capacity, we expect we will be able to deliver 10-13 million doses per month when supply and allocations allow.” And for more on other recognizable names offering shots, check out If You Live in These States, You Can Get a COVID Vaccine at CVS Next Week.

While Americans are being highly encouraged to get a COVID-19 vaccine, pharmacies are looking ahead to the 2021 flu season.

CVS, Walmart, Walgreens and Rite Aid have announced they are accepting appointments for people to get a flu shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people age 6 months and older receive a flu shot before the end of October and that getting it is even more important during the pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing the overall burden of respiratory illnesses is important to protect vulnerable populations at risk for severe illness, the healthcare system, and other critical infrastructure. Thus, healthcare personnel should use every opportunity during the influenza season to administer influenza vaccines to all eligible persons, the CDC said.

Rite Aid is offering the flu vaccine via walk-in appointments and online scheduling. Rite Aid began administering the flu shot on Aug. 12.

Walmart said it is offering a low-cost flu vaccine and a free COVID-19 vaccine that people can get at the same time.

Walmart said it also will continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while administering vaccines.

CVS said it has flu shots available at all CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations.

Access To Newly Approved Vaccines Will Boost Supply In The Coming Weeks

Low supplies of Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s vaccines has created a bottleneck in the vaccination process in some areas. But Gates pointed out that the likely approval of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, which was submitted for an emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Feb. 4, will increase the number of doses available.

Compared to Moderna’s and Pfizer’s doses, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires only one shot instead of two, and can be more easily stored with normal refrigeration for much longer than the existing inoculations. “It’s just good news for all of us that there’s going to be more vaccine available,” Gates told CNBC.
